Ardeu is geographically placed in what is generically known as Orăştie Region. Ardeu was influenced along the time by adjacent ethnographical spaces;therefore elements of folklore share a series of common traits with neighboring villages (this is because of easy connections between them) but also Ardeu has specific traits,independently developed. These are customs connected to birth,baptism,wedding,funeral,different stages in agriculture and/or religion (on Epiphany,1st of March,Easter,Palm Sunday,St. John’s Day,“Old Saints”,Christmas etc.),as well as socializing customs,ones that are meant to strengthen the connection of the community (such as clacă,şezătoare,nedee etc. – all these are traditional community works).
As for the traditional costume (similar to the ones used in Orăștie Region),there are similar traits in all villages from around,both women’s and men’s costumes. Women wear a white kerchief,adorned with black motifs sewn on one side. The shirt was made of hemp,usually made at home,with long and large sleeves,ended in wrinkles named “fodori”. The collar,chest and sleeves were adorned with different floral patterns;the predominant color was black – although the holiday shirt might have been adorned with multicolored patterns. The women’s costumes also had white lap,with a front and back “aprons”. The waist was covered with a woolen,house made,colorful belt. They wore opinci. The men wore a clop (a straw or cloth hat) during the summer and fur hat,usually black,made of lambskin,during the winter. They had a white shirt,adorned with flower-shaped motifs. During the winter,they used to wear a sheepskin vest over the shirt. The men’s costume was completed,during the summer,by white,hemp trousers,or,during the winter,by woolen trousers (cioareci). They also wore a very wide,leather belt,with multiple pockets.
Typologically Ardeu is similar to the other villages in the area,with stone,wooden or brick households. The house plan had two big rooms and a porch. Most of the old houses used to be painted blue.
The traditional crafts have suffered a great deal,mostly over the last century,but mainly the people from Ardeu have reduced in territory agriculture;they also grow animals and fruit trees.
